The four Pons brothers from Breda moved to Barcelona to learn a trade. They all worked as apprentices in shops where they made work clothes. A memorable anecdote is when they slept on the counter where the clothes were marked and cut after the workday.
After a few years as apprentices, they all looked to establish themselves in Barcelona making work clothes, each with their own shop.
Alfred Pons initially worked selling women's underwear. When his wife died, he decided to change his business and opened the store we know today, Alfred Pons, together with one of his brothers, at 16 Calle Muntaner in Barcelona.
During this time, he married Enriqueta, and their son, also named Alfred Pons, was born. After finishing his studies, young Pons began an apprenticeship in the same shop. He took care of various errands, such as packing and carrying packages, and later began learning how to cut and mark patterns. At 19, Alfred Pons Sr. died, and young Alfred took over the business with his uncle. They continued to move forward, continuing with the pattern-making and designs they had.
At that time, the designs were simpler and more classic, clothing made with 100% cotton fabric. The color white predominated in all the garments produced. Alfred Pons remembers when workers would come in on Saturday afternoons to buy their own clothes. Later, companies were required to provide and pay for workers with the clothing they needed to do their jobs. So, in those days, between the 1930s and 1940s, contracts were individual, and later, they dealt directly with the company.
A few years later, Pons's daughters, Sandra and Gina, joined the store. They are pattern makers and already had experience from working elsewhere. They began creating different designs, especially for women. Designs that featured more colors, so the companies could stand out from others and be easily recognizable, as well as the company's brand. And although all the fabrics used to make the different garments are cotton with polyester or synthetic fibers, Alfred Pons makes 100% cotton garments to order.
Natàlia joined later and has been in charge of distribution, purchasing and sales, and store management until now.
Alfred Pons, workwear, relocated to 22 Muntaner Street in Barcelona, is a small but more modern and customer-friendly shop. The design process, pattern marking, and fabric cutting are transparently displayed, allowing customers to truly see the process carried out in the shop. Despite being a modern store, we'll find a clock from 1927 inside. A clock Alfred Pons bought and still maintains, as well as all the tradition and practically the craftsmanship with which they make each of their custom garments.
